Fill up your basket at borough’s new street market
An exciting and unique new street market which aims to help small and independent businesses bounce back from the pandemic in the town centre’s historic heart.
Basingstoke’s Top of the Town will be filled with unique locally-made and handcrafted goods and delicious food as part of the new Borough Basket Street Market, taking place on the last Friday of each month. The first market took place on 30 July and the next one is scheduled for Friday 24 September from 11am to 5.30pm.
Using funding from the government’s Welcome Back Fund, the new market is part of Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s work to encourage shoppers to return to the town centre and support the borough’s economic recovery.
Building on the success of the borough’s first online marketplace, The Borough Basket, the new market will give 20 local small and independent retailers an opportunity to sell their goods each month, with new retailers encouraged to come forward each month.
Retailers taking part in the market can take advantage of gazebo hire, a listing on The Borough Basket online marketplace and promotion on the Love Basingstoke website and social media.
Cabinet Member for Economic Development Cllr Hannah Golding said: “After a difficult period of restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are delighted to launch the new Borough Basket Street Market as part of our work on economic recovery.
“We hope these vibrant new monthly markets will provide small and independent businesses across the borough with a new platform to sell their goods and encourage shoppers to shop local and support our businesses.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for small business owners creating new or recycled products and we would encourage more businesses to come forward to try it for the first time, so please get in touch.”

The Welcome Back Fund is providing councils across England with a share of £56 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) to support the safe return to high streets and help build back better from the pandemic.
The Borough Basket platform was set up to support small and independent businesses in Basingstoke and Deane by making it easy for them to sell their products and services online to a wider audience by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, The Designlab and partners through the Love Basingstoke group, and is supported by IncuHive Business Incubation services who assists shop owners with business advice.
